CHAPTER 17

I Think He’s Mine…

It didn’t take them long to get to the place Rachel was talking about. It was a secluded part of the hospital, tucked back into a little alcove. It was set up for patients’ families and at first Collin felt a bit uneasy using it, but Rachel reassured him that no one really realized it was there. Most families tended to stick to another area of that part of the hospital. Once she informed him of that he was fine eating while they both sat there and chatted, enjoying their time together.

The best part was that he was getting to see another part of her life that he hadn’t yet seen. She looked stressed, but she smiled at him as they spoke. He could see she enjoyed her work, even when it stressed her out or even when it made it impossible for them to spend time together, he could see that it still brought her joy to help people. It was just another reason he wanted to be there for her and to get closer to her. There were other things he wanted, sure, but he wasn’t willing to let himself hope for those just yet.

He was fine to do what they had agreed upon and take it as slow as she wanted. They both sat there long enough to eat the food he had gotten and chat for a little while. They chatted about everything except what was stressing her out and of course any other topic that pertained to her job. It wasn’t long till she was paged over the intercom.

Rachel stood up and took a deep breath. “Well, I guess that’s my queue,” she teased.

“I guess so,” he returned standing up and taking a step toward her. Wrapping his arms around her, he whispered into her ear, “Good luck, I hope you’re patient is able to get the surgery she needs.”

With a nod, Collin felt her take a deep breath before she pulled back. “I really should get going. Thanks again for lunch, it was really sweet of you.”

“Anytime,” he told her as she turned to walk away from him. “Hey, call me later,” Collin called out. He didn’t get to hear her reply, though, because she was already through another set of swinging doors. “What is it about those damn doors?” he muttered to himself.

With a shake of his head and his thoughts still on his girl, Collin made his way back toward the elevator and stepped on as soon as the doors opened. Heading down to the main floor, he headed toward the front door of the hospital and stepped outside into the chilly afternoon air.

Collin made his way back toward the apartment and the bar. Looking down at his watch he realized he had spent a bit more time with Rachel than he had planned. Not that he minded. He had been enjoying just talking with her, but it was already after two and he really needed to get back to the bar to help with the set up for the day.
